The project “Legal Aid Watch” is carried out within the framework of the Active Citizens Fund programme and implemented by the Hellenic League for Human Rights.
The Active citizens fund in Greece is supported through a € 13.5m grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway as part of the EEA Grants 2014 – 2021. The program aims to develop the sustainability and capacity of the civil society sector in Greece, and to strengthen its role in promoting and safeguarding democratic procedures, active citizenship and human rights. The Fund Operator for the Active citizens fund in Greece is Bodossaki Foundation in consortium with Solidarity Now.
The project aims to promote and improve the institution of legal aid in Greece, with an emphasis on the area of criminal justice. The right to fair trial and specifically, the right to an effective defense are fundamental to the European legal order and belong in the main core of the concept of rule of law. Thus, the extent, reliability and effectiveness of the institution of free legal aid offered by the State to our fellow low-income citizens are crucial as they guarantee the legal protection of the right and secure the proper administration of justice.
